The Department has the following well-equipped laboratories:
Non-destructive testing Equipment (NDT)
Nondestructive testing (NDT) is the process of inspecting, testing, or evaluating materials, components or assemblies for discontinuities, or differences in characteristics without destroying the serviceability of the part or system. In other words, when the inspection or test is completed the part can still be used.
These destructive tests are often used to determine the physical properties of materials such as impact resistance, ductility, yield and ultimate tensile strength, fracture toughness and fatigue strength, but discontinuities and differences in material characteristics are more effectively found by NDT.
Today modern nondestructive tests are used in manufacturing, fabrication and in-service inspections to ensure product integrity and reliability, to control manufacturing processes, lower production costs and to maintain a uniform quality level. During construction, NDT is used to ensure the quality of materials and joining processes during the fabrication and erection phases, and in-service NDT inspections are used to ensure that the products in use continue to have the integrity necessary to ensure their usefulness and the safety of the public.
DC motor controlled Shake table
DC motor controlled shake table is an equipment which generates vibration. It is a valuable tool for the seismic behavior assessment of civil engineering structures.
The shake table consists of a vibration table, thus designed for generation of vibration, DC motor controller.
Vibration table– The models can be mounted directly on the top plate of the vibration table or a circular mounting plate is also provided to mount the models.
User designed Cam– A set of four cams has been provided, to generate simple harmonic motion of different amplitude 0.5, 1 and 2mm. A saw tooth cam to provide saw tooth type of base motion of 10mm.
DC motor controller-It is provided to control the speed of the DC motor in the shake table and hence the frequency of base motion of the shake table. The DC motor controller is provided with a digital tachometer for displaying of motor speed in revolution per minute.
Accelerometer– They are precision transducers for measurement of acceleration component of vibration. They are designed to be rugged and generate signal o/p in millivolts proportional to the acceleration component of vibration. The direction of sensing of motion is along the length of the accelerometer.

Loading Frame that is widely used to test structural elements like columns, beams, portal frames and other structures.
The frame is fabricated from standard rolled sections for assured strength. The skeleton of basic frame is designed as self straining where no load is transferred to the ground except self weight of the frame. The frame is designed for vertical load of up to the standard range and horizontal load of up to a fifth of the vertical load sale load. Vertical load is generally used for testing of major structural elements like beams and columns. The horizontal load is used for stimulating wind load on portal frames, tissues etc.
The basic frame consists of
- Top Rectangular Frame (TRF)
- Bottom Longitudinal Girder (BLG)
- Columns (C)
- upper Cross Beams (UCB)
- Lower Cross Beams (LCB)
- The UCB and LCB move along longitudinal direction.
Proper placing and positioning of load is ensured by means of the UCB, while the LCB are moved in such a way as to ensure proper span of the member to be tested. Beams, columns and slabs can be tested in the Loading Frame.
- Surveying and Levelling Lab :
The Lab is well equipped with basic measuring instruments to advanced instruments like Digital Planimeter, Total Station, and GPS etc.The students are exposed to live projects apart from their academic curriculum.The students are encouraged to work individually as well as in groups, to instill confidence.
- Basic Material Testing Lab :
Material testing Lab is well equipped with UTM, hardness testing machines, impact testing machine, sieve shaker and oven.The students work on different building materials like stone, jelly, brick, sand and cement. They are encouraged to characterize the given materials.
- Geology Lab :
Geology Lab is well equipped with about 300 samples of Rocks and 300 samples of minerals. Some of the rare minerals and rocks are available in the spaciously designed Geology Lab. With number of charts and models avaiLable it is pleasant learning experience for the students.
- Building Drawing Studio : One of the well-designed building drawing studio which can easily accommodate 70 tables and ample space for model making it motivates students
- Computer Aided Design Lab : Dept of Civil Engineering has Established CAD Lab with high resolution work stations and licensed software of Autocad and STAAD pro is available.
- Hydraulics and Hydraulics Machine Lab : KSSEM has established Hydraulics and Hydraulics Machine Lab which is being used by both Civil and Mechanical Department. The Lab is well equipped with a sophisticated equipment’s which includes 5mts flume and Pelton wheel, Kaplan turbine, multi stage centrifugal pump etc to name a few.
- Environmental Engineering Lab :
Environmental lab is well equipped with advanced instruments like UV Spectrometer, Flamephotometer, Colorimeter, Centrifuge, PH Meter, Nephla turbidity meter, Conductivity meter, Muffle furnace, Oven, Rotary shaker, Motor kit analyzer, Distillation unit etc.
Lab is spacious & well furnished with glasswares, which help students to take up project & work on current environmental issues.
- Concrete & Highway Lab :
Concrete and Highway Materials Lab is well equipped with major equipment such as CTM, Cement Autoclave, Los-Angeles abrasion testing machine, CBR apparatus, Marshall stability testing apparatus, Compaction Apparatus, Concrete mixer etc…
In this laboratory, we test the quality of materials such as cement, bitumen, aggregates etc. are used in construction of buildings & highways.
- Geo Technical Engineering Lab :
Geotechnical Engineering Lab is well equipped with major equipment such as Direct Shear Testing Apparatus Unconfined Compression Testing Apparatus, Vane Shear testing Apparatus, Triaxial Shear test Apparatus , consolidometer, permeameter, compaction testing apparatus etc…
Engineering properties of soil such as shear strength, maximum dry density, permeability, consolidation, index properties can be determined in the lab.
