About The Program

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, started M.Tech in VLSI design and Embedded systems in the year 2012. The program is approved by AICTE , government of Karnataka and is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka.

Advances in VLSI have today enabled most systems to become compact, highly reliable and deliver data at high speed. Further the advances facilitate the designer to tailor the IC for specific applications (Application Specific Integrated Circuits). Requirement of improved solutions for miniaturization, high speed, reliability, and high performance computers, necessitates skilled engineers. Thus there is an urgent need to produce quality engineers who can conceive, design and develop VLSI and Embedded systems.

The programme curriculum is aimed at VLSI system design (both Front end & Back end designs) covering algorithms, Hardware description Languages, System Architectures, Physical designs, Verification techniques, Simulation & Synthesis, Low power design techniques and Mixed mode design methodologies. The course also offers strong knowledge in the Embedded system design by covering thrust areas such as Advanced Embedded Microcontrollers, Real Time Embedded Systems, Advanced Embedded System Design and System On Chip. Students also have an access to industry collaborative laboratories set up by Texas Instruments, Nxp Semiconductors and Freescale semiconductors.

This is a 2-year graduate program which involves three semesters of intense coursework and a final semester project, either in the institute or as an internship at leading VLSI companies, making it a job-centric program. The courses taken by students include VLSI Dsign, Advanced Digital Design and HDL, Analog & Mixed Signal Design, Advanced Computer Architecture, VLSI Algorithms, Embedded Systems, CMOS RFIC Design, and other electives offered by the Institute.

Areas of Research

The students will get an opportunity to participate in projects related to, but not limited to: Design of Low power VLSI system, Optimization of Digital circuits, Synthesis of Digital Circuits, Testing of VLSI circuits , Design of Real time Embedded systems and large area flexible electronics.

Placement opportunities

Companies like INTEL, Infenion, Alcatel-Lucent, Infosys, Wipro, Texas Instruments and many more offer internship and placement opportunities.

Introduction

Engineering analysis involves the application of scientific analytic principles and processes to reveal the properties and state of the system, device or mechanism under study.Generally, in our study in mechanical engineering, analysis is the determination of the effects of loads on physical structures and their components. It incorporates in the fields of applied
mechanics, materials science etc to compute a structure’s deformations, internal forces, stresses, support reactions, accelerations, and stability.

Approaches for Analysis

Generally, there are three approaches to the analysis of a given system/body:

  1. Strength of Materials approach
  2. Elasticity Approach (continuum mechanics),
  3. Finite element Approach.

The first two make use of analytical formulations, which apply mostly to simple linear elastic models, lead to closed-form solutions, and can often be solved by hand. The finite element approach is actually a numerical method for solving differential equations generated by theories of mechanics such as elasticity theory and strength of materials. However, the finite-element method depends heavily on the processing power of computers and is more applicable to structures of arbitrary size and complexity.

In this course, the students study all the above three approaches for solving real problems both analytically and through computer skills. The students coming out of this course will attain rich knowledge and gain confidence to solve real problem in Industries/Research wing.

Importance of Analysis in Industry

In Industry, new problems always encounter and an attention must be paid to solve the issues. When a problem is encountered, they need to see all sides of a problem to come up with an acceptable solution. Analysis involves studying the system and seeing how they interact with the entities outside as well as inside the system. Then industries come out with detailed specifications of what the system will accomplish based on the user requirements. Systems design will take the requirements and analysis into consideration and come out with a high level and low level design that will form the blue print to the actual solution to the problem in hand. In this dynamic world, analysis and design have to look into making systems that a flexible enough to accommodate changes as they are inevitable in any system.But most of the projects in industry fail due to improper knowledge on technical aspects of the systems. The major problem is that the industry uses the computer/FEM approach to solve the problem with minimum analytical approach. The people may not be able to tackle the problem analytically and compare the results acquired from FEM approach.

Also, during the release of the product in Industry, the consumer should accept the particular feature in the product. The product should satisfy the customer in quality and translating the use of product into action. The industry finds it difficult to understand the practical significance of research findings; one might be as “level of stress”.

From the above the following are the findings required in Industry

  1. Lack of Analytical Knowledge about the subject
  2. More oriented towards computer based coaching/experience without much
    knowledge about basics

Benefit of this Course

This course is well designed covering the analytical aspects on core subjects in Mechanical Engineering. This knowledge is very much essential in imparting to the students/community to get benefited for recruitment in major companies. More companies in and around Bangalore require a people with analytical knowledge of the subject. This course will fulfill the gap between the Industry requirement and knowledge updating to the students. The course also explains the comparison between the analytical approach and computer aided process to a particular problem.

Eligibility:

Candidates who have acquired BE/B.Tech or equivalent degree in Automobile Engineering / Industrial And Engg Management / Industrial And Production Engg / Manufacturing Science And Engg / Mechanical Engineering / Production Engineering by securing not less than 50% marks in aggregate are eligible. However in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/Group, the aggregate percent of marks in qualifying examination should not be less than 45%. The admissions are through central counselling on the basis of merit in PGCET or GATE. A few seats are also available under sponsored and Management quota. GATE qualified candidates are eligible for scholarship through AICTE.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering started M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering in the year 2013. The program is approved by AICTE, New Delhi, and Government of Karnataka and is affiliated to Visvesvaraiah Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka.

The objective of this discipline is to train the manpower required

  1. (a) To meet the industry needs.
  2. (b) To pursue research in specialized areas.
  3. (c) To meet the growing needs of engineering colleges for trained faculty in Computer Science and Engineering.

The curriculum is aimed to give theoretical and hands on in the areas of Advances in Operating Systems, Advances in DBMS, Computer Systems Performance Analysis, Formal Models in Computer Science, Advanced Algorithms, Advances in Computer Architecture, Computer Networks, and offers elective subjects like Advances in Digital Image Processing, Computer Graphics & Visualization, Topics in Artificial Intelligence, Protocols Engineering, Advances in Storage Area Networks, Advances in Compiler Design, Advances in Pattern Classification, Information Security etc.

Course Details:

The Department of civil engineering is pleased to announce the commencement of master’s program in structural engineering from the year 2013-14.

This course is designed to help the students improve their experience in structural engineering. Issues addressed in the course will help familiarize the student with common challenges in the design office and on the site.

The main objectives of the course are to

  • To provide our students receiving master’s degrees with a strong technical education that will prepare them for successful professional careers in industry, or for continued research in their area of specialization.
