Industrial Visit to Karnataka Rural Building Center (KRBC)

Industrial Visit represents important activities in an Engineering Undergraduate Programme that contributes to the achievement of various essential learning outcomes and programme objectives.

The paper report is an attempt to make the industrial visit an integral part of the course. This is achieved through identifying learning outcomes and a suitable industrial site visit.

In this case Karnataka Rural Building Center (KRBC) was identified as the site to be visited by Civil Engineering 3rd Semester Students.

Importance of Industrial Visit:

It helps students to gain firsthand information regarding functioning of industries.

Provides an opportunity to plan, organize and engage in active learning experiences both in and outside the class room.

Helps to enhance their interpersonal skill and communications.

About KRBC:

Mr.M.P.UmaShankar is the Chairrman and Chief Executive of KRBC.This is located in Attna Village of Nagamangala Taluk in Mandya District and was established in 1995 and got approval from Govt of India in the year 2000-01 and developed full-fledged production unit in 2008-09.

KRBC is promoted by Ministry of Rural Development Govt of India.

KRBC is a building technology transfer center for promoting innovative, cost effective and eco-friendly precast technologies.

This industrial Visit was on 9th Sep 2015 and headed by our respectable Teachers.

Mr.Anantha Padmanabha

Mrs. Supriya M D

Mrs. Veena and

Mr.Gopala Krishna Rao

Observation and Learnings:

The following are the building products produced in KRBC

  1. Prefabricated columns with footings
  2. Lintel and Chejja
  3. RCC footing materials
  4. Instant toilets
  5. Prefabricated RCC beams.

Prefabricated slabs

Use of Ferro cement component

Recycling of C&D works and reuse of recycled products

Sieve Shaker fabricated at KRBC

Fillers for roofing system

Prefabricated columns

Prefabricated compound walls

Benefits of using Prefabricated building components

Pre-fabricated RCC roofing Components: These components reduce the time of construction from 25 days to 2 days .And are suitable for inner roofs.

Pre-fabricated RCC Compound Walls: Compound wall involves precast RCC pillar and wall panel’s This is cost effective, fast executed and can be shifted to other places.

Instant toilets

These toilets are useful for individual household, community toilets, hostels, factories etc. These toilets are made of Alloy sheets which are rust proof, fire proof and wind proof. It can easily shift to any place and can be handled easily, it’s easy to erect and execution of completion of work consumes 2hours.

  1. Faster Construction.
  2. Reduces labour component at site.
  3. Quality of structure is controlled and assured.
  4. Reduces cost of construction.
  5. Provides opportunity to adopt new innovations in Civil Engineering.

Industrial visit provides the students programmes with dynamic real time feedback, which is very useful in the learning process.

It enables institution to build a good rapport with industrial experts and also achieve the learning outcome to students.

We would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to Mr.M.P.Uma Shankar and KRBC management and staff for their immense support to us.

The Department of Civil Engineering had organized a National Conference on “Advances in Structures and Materials“ (NCASM-15) on 27th April 2015 in association with ACCE and ICI.

Conference often means a chance for faculty to gain useful knowledge in both teaching and research. The purpose of this conference was not only to discuss the structural systems and their applications but also to discuss advances in materials, trends and critical issues related to structural engineering.

Civil engineering is the art of construction of all kinds of structures and has been at human service since the beginning of civilization evolution. A Structure is a state of equilibrium of materials which is subjected to external loads to be serviceable for a given condition. The term “Advances in structures and materials” hence indicates the invention of new materials better constructions. The performance of materials can be increased by combining different materials (Composites). For example performance of cement can be increased tremendously due to addition of pozzolonic materials to cement. The advancement in structures happens with development in materials.

Students and faculties from various colleges participated and presented technical papers in the national conference in large number and the best paper was considered for publication in the issues of international reviewer with ISSN No. 2395-1575 on online journal.

The advisory committee included Professors and HOD’s of the esteemed institutions who reviewed and awarded the best papers.

The event was very successful and helpful.

Students of 5th and 3rd Semester Civil, were asked to make miniature models imitating any structure and prepare informative charts in various fields. Few students were too good not only in imitating existing structure but also in creating their own miniatures keeping the working concepts alive. The models were neat, precise and to scale, it looked as if the original structures which we see daily had become small and was lying in front of us. And the charts had more information and understandable which enlightened anyone who read. This helped the students to gather additional information and also brought their hidden talent out.

These models were exhibited on 1st year inauguration programme and students got appreciation from parents as well as teachers.
